Permanent Cosmetics
FAQs
What is Permanent Cosmetics?
Permanent cosmetic makeup is cosmetic tattooing, and its specialized techniques are often referred to as “micropigmentation”, “permanent makeup,” or “ PMU.” The cosmetic implantation technique deposits colored pigment into the upper reticular layer of the dermis. Permanent cosmetics procedures are performed using various devices, including the traditional tattoo coil machines, the pen or rotary machine (including the digital rotary machines), and the non-machine or hand device. The PMU process includes a consultation, the application of pigment, and at least one or more follow up visits for evaluating the healed design work and color of the pigment.
How long does it last?
Permanent cosmetics procedures are considered permanent because pigment is tattooed into the upper reticular dermal layer of the skin and cannot be washed off. However, as with any tattoo or colorant (pigment) in general, fading can and often does occur. This requires periodic maintenance referred to as color re-enhancement or color refreshing. Generally, PMU can last anywhere from one to three years depending on one’s internal and external factors.
How do I know if I’m a candidate?
Consultations, which can be done in person or over the phone, are required prior to booking any PMU appointment. Some exclusions do apply so please read the full description under Consultation before booking. You are not a candidate for PMU if you: are pregnant or nursing, diabetic, anemic, have auto-immune disorders, keloid scars, lupus, skin conditions in the treatment area, are undergoing chemo/radiation (minimum one year with doctor’s note), taking Accutane (one year minimum), as well as other factors. There are also multiple medications, vitamins, and supplements that must be discontinued before tattooing that will be discussed during your consultation. Please note, all clients must discontinue any blood thinning medications or components such as caffeine, alcohol, Tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen, etc., 24 to 28 hours before scheduled tattooing.
What is the process?
Once you’ve completed your consultation and are in fact a candidate for procedure, you will pay a $100 non-refundable deposit to secure your first session. Each technique requires an initial session followed by a touchup session 8 to 12 weeks later. A third touchup is sometimes necessary to achieve desired results, but not often. At your first session, we begin with sanitizing the area to be tattooed and begin brow mapping. Mapping is a technique used to find symmetry based on the structure of your face. This ensures balance between the brows and lips. Once your mapping is completed, we will numb the area with a topical cream for 20 minutes and then begin the procedure. Your first session is 2 hours, and your touchup session will be 1.5 hours. After care kits and instruction are included in every session.
